Surrey Large Item Pickup: What the City Takes — and When Private Hauling Makes Sense

Surrey’s Free Large Item Pickup Program

As of September 2026, the City of Surrey says households receiving City waste collection can schedule up to 6 large items per year. Homes with a registered secondary suite can receive up to 8 items per year. The service is included in the garbage utility.

• Apartment buildings receiving City recycling: up to 4 items per year, arranged through the property manager or strata
• Pickup must be scheduled before items are placed at the curb

Surrey says the program can collect many common bulky items, including furniture, mattresses, large appliances and electronics. In a February 2026 update, the City said added trucks had reduced typical scheduling to about two to three weeks.

When the City Program May Not Fit

The City program is an excellent first option when you are eligible and your items are accepted. A private hauler can make more sense when:

• You have more items than the annual program limit
• You need the material gone sooner than the available City pickup date
• Your property does not receive the municipal service required for eligibility
• Your item is not on the City’s accepted list
• You have a mixed cleanout rather than a small number of curb-ready large items

Surrey specifically warns that leaving unscheduled large items at the curb may be treated as illegal dumping and can lead to fines, so book the City service first if that is the route you choose.

A Good Rule of Thumb

If you have a few eligible large items and time to wait for the City’s appointment, use the municipal program. If you have a larger cleanout, mixed rubbish, a tight timeline or items outside the City’s program, a private rubbish-removal service may be more practical.
